Being a volunteer member was the best experience I’ve ever had. Throughout the community service time my perspective has changed even though it was only 30 hours of community service. My community service place was at PACS, which is a place that sells some used clothes, shoes, and other useful stuff at low prices to homeless people or poor people. My job was to organize all the clothes and clean it up (goods and processing). Even though most of their stuff were used, we needed to clean it and only keep the best quality items. There were about 20 -40 volunteers’ total at PACS. Many people were willing to help others and they were real friendly. Since our customers were mostly homeless people or poor people, I have learned how I can help the homeless people. Even though I can’t help them with money, I realized that I can use my little time to help them. Before I started my community service, I couldn’t fully understand other people’s situation. Through volunteering I have learned that many organizations exist only with the help of volunteers from the community, I have seen the amount of joy that volunteering brings to those who you are helping out, I discovered a feeling of self-satisfaction that no other activity can bring, and lastly I have learned to spend my time wisely.
Many organizations throughout our community solely rely on volunteers. While volunteering to earn my hours for the Legacy Scholarship I learned that as citizens of this community, it is our duty to keep these organizations going by volunteering. Farms with 200 head or more of cattle must comply with a wide range of environmental regulations. Mike Contessa explained, “We work with all the state regulatory agencies to ensure that farms stay in compliance or to get into compliance. Farms must have certain permits. We take care of their permit filing and documentation. USDA also provides grants to help farmers comply with these regulations. The grants are competitive, so we work with farmers to get them ranked as high as possible. Our goal is to have no pollution happening on a dairy farm and to utilize all the manure nutrients for crop production.”
